Ki-O-Rahi

Ki-O-Rahi is a ball game traditionally played by the Maori’s, Rahi and the enemy tribe. The ball is an original wooden/flax ball named the “Ki”. The Te Tupu is the rock that Rahi was trapped on. Ara represents the pathway of silver ferns, and the pou are the 7 stars of Matariki.

Things that represent Ki-O-Rahi are from the legend of Rahi and the Patupaiarehe, the game tells Rahi’s wife, Te Ara, who has been abducted by an enemy tribe, while the abduction a Tohunga (wizard or priest), had casted a spell on the forest to become dense and impenetrable, so Rahi had built a kite and crafted a few flax bags to carry some Moa eggs, for nourishment during his journey.

When he was preparing god of the wind, Tawhirimatea blew Rahi and the kite high in the sky. While on the ground Te Ara had been secretly folding silver ferns for Rahi to find. They had noticed Rahi’s presence which the Tohunga had casted another spell which caused an extreme sun to come into play, it was the sister of Ra, the regular sun. The green forest quickly became a wasteland, beautiful to an ugly mess, a strong wind blew all the remaining leaves on ground (along with the silver ferns).

Anyway long story short Rahi had rescued Te Ara from the enemy tribe in a mountain that became unstable, where everyone was forced to evacuate, everyone but the Tohunga had escape where he went flying up with the mountain into the heavens where he still causes trouble. Rahi thought he needed peace, so he decided to make a game named Ki-O-Rahi.

And that is how the game was made from the legend Rahi.

Kahurangi

"Kia ora everyone," said Aroha as we all got a fright. We had just arrived at this Kapa Haka performance in the hall. There were 5 people, another guys one name Lucky. He was humorous. When they were doing really cool  dances the 5 of them had strong powerful voices.

After they had finished doing the dance they picked 2 kids and 1 teacher from our school. Their names were Auri, Korobeau and Mr Goodwin. They had to try copy the moves the man with the stick was doing. They were all funny because all of them did it wrong. When the man and the lady were performing they had beautiful perfectly pitched harmony which nearly made me cry.

Now Lucky and Aroha started doing a really loud hake. Lucky was creeping some of us out because he does really scary pukanas and sometimes they did funny facial expressions. Everybody was giggling because Lucky was making googly eyes and he started whacking people with his Maori stick and said ‘’ Hey why are you laughing!!!’’.

We eventually had gotten out noticing we had to go for a run I moaned for a while. “Well now we are going for a run, man my back was hurting when sitting down” I had said to Brodie who hadn't replied.

Diving Writing

Diving has being in the Olympics since 1904 and that is 110 years ago. Diving was named one of the most popular sport with spectators. In the Olympics there is no 1m high diving board, just a 3m springboard and a 10m platform

For the points the dive gets judged  3 marks for takeoff, 3 for flight and 3 for entry, there is 1 point left for the judges to give them more flexibility. Extra height is extra points and the points are multiplied by a difficulty factor.
The judges judge by how well you jump and how well you enter the water. You can get points for minimal splashes and the amount of rotations and somersaults. When some of the competitors enter the water they enter on a slight angle and end up with quite a big splash. The competitor with the highest points is the winner of the competition.

The judges won’t only look for people who are great divers but also they are looking for people with height, rotations, somersaults, & the entry. There are two different heights, which is 3m and 10m, which means that 3m’s is on a springboard, while

Film Festival Recount

Wednesday 30th, the day we went to the Civic in Town we were peacefully reading our books until Mrs Nua had came in to our class to get the kids who were going to the Civic (I was one), once she had gotten us she then went into the other classes and grabbed the others. She then did a roll call there would only be 35 people to go, “I can’t wait” I said to Kori, who was one of my best friends, “Well I guess it might be fun who knows” he answered back.

While we were heading to the Civic, everyone at the back and front had started singing songs like, Powhiri Mai Ra, Wheels On The Bus, and a few other English & Maori songs.

“We’ve gone past it I think” Kori said. We got off of the bus and formed into two lines. We entered the civic and went down some stairs. Finding our seats we were in the fourth or fifth row. Waiting for the other schools to arrive, we were chatting quietly and loud. Slowly but surely they had arrived. A man had introduced us to what we were watching and how long it was here for, he said “Welcome to the civic theatre there will be at least 15 or 16 movies.”

The first movie was about kids with mums like Nurses, Animal Doctors, Ballerina’s, Dump trucks, but... one kids mum was an Aeroplane!. They had flown all around delivering mail and making everyone/thing happy.

In the next scene a big scary aeroplane had shown in a scene and was approaching Mother Plane, but it had then stopped, saluted, she saluted back and carried on.

A storm had trapped her, the storm picked up every other person from the ground while she was surrounded around the storm but she had used her umbrella to pop it, with it gone away and everyone had started cheering. The kid had gotten off of his mum only..... to get on his dad and he was a boat!

The other films were pretty great, there was one called the Numberlys it was all about Numbers until...one has an idea about making the alphabet, they have gotten color, names, and more it seemed to be the best movie I had watched.

Once the movies were finished, we all lined up and walked out, onto the bus again, this time Kori and I have gotten to the back of the bus, “Yus we are near the back!” I said with excitement to Kori, we eventually got back to school at 12:25.

Instrument Making

Francis: Drum

How to Make it:

Step One: Buy a Pot/Bucket

Find a pot or something like that usually look around at garage sales for pots/buckets

Step Two: Decide what sized balloon is best to use as the skin

Step Three: Cut off the mouthpiece

Step 4: Stretching the skin over the pot/bucket.

Place the balloon over one end of the bowl and simply stretch it over the entire
opening.

Sometimes it is easier to do this with three hands, so either use your knee to keep the balloon on as you stretch it over, or ask for a friend’s help.

Step Five: Secure the balloon skin

This is the biggest trick! If the container you’re using has perpendicular sides, like a stew pot does, you can secure the balloon skin by wrapping and tying a non-inflated skinny (twisting) balloon around it. If you’re using a soup bowl with angled sides, the skinny balloon will slide right off—so you’ll need to make it stay put with thick packing tape.

Once it is secured, your balloon drum is ready to play

Step Six: Hit It!

Chopsticks from your local Chinese restaurant make for good balloon drums sticks. Regular drumsticks are too large and heavy. You can also try shishkabob skewers or #2 pencils, using the eraser end to hit the balloon.

Last But Not Least

Noo-Noo it seems to be both the Teletubbies Guardian and Vacuum Cleaner.

Teletubbies is a British BBC children’s series targeted at pre-school viewers it was first produced from 31st March 1997 and it had ended around the 5th of January 2001, it was created by Ragdoll Productions. It was also broadcasted on P.B.S. or otherwise known as Public Broadcasting Service, since the 6th of April 1998 until the 19th of June 2005.

Teletubbies, particularly notable for its great films it has been given a great budget which is known as a high production value, rapidly became one of the critical and commercial success in Britain and abroad it had won a BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) in 1988. Not so long after something else called Teletubbies Everywhere was awarded “Best Pre-school Live Action Series” at the 2002 Children’s BAFTA Awards.

Even though it is aimed at children between the ages of one and four, it has  a substantial cult following with older generations, mainly University and College students. The mixture of bright colours, unusual designs, repetitive non-verbal dialogue, ritualistic format, and occasional forays into physical comedy appealed to many as who perceived the programme as having psychedelic qualities.

In June 2014 the BBC announced a new 60-episode series of Teletubbies will be aired, with DHX Media, which recently acquired Ragdoll Productions, producing the series. It marks the first new episodes of the series since 2001 also the first to be aired on CBeebies, after reruns were broadcast on the channel. But however, the new series will be filmed on replica model sets instead instead of the Warwickshire countryside (the original setting for Teletubbyland) since a pond now exists there. It is unknown if the original actors will return or not.
